“PLEASE HELP…”, posted Sarah on a Sunshine Coast community board. “My brother-in-law Brett has recently been granted a wedding ceremony through My Wedding Wish… Would anyone be able to recommend a videographer?” I didn’t know it at the time, but My Wedding Wish help organise wedding ceremonies for people who are terminally ill and want to get married in the short time-frame to make the most of the time they have left with their loved one.

Brett was diagnosed just 2 weeks ago with Motor Neurone Disease. Now deterioting quickly, he may only have a few weeks left.

It’s causes like Brett’s that keep us going here 100 Acts of Kindness Films.

Within a couple of days of touching base with Brett and his bride-to-be Desley, and with Brett losing his voice more and more every day, we drove up from Canungra in the Scenic Rim, to the Sunshine Coast, to film them in the first of two shoots; the second being the wedding in January 2021. We wanted to catch his wedding vows just in case his voice fades away completely by the time him and Desley marry. Thank you guys for letting us be part of your happy day .

As documentary focused cinematographers, at 100 Acts of Kindness Films, we endeavour to go above and beyond, to capture stories in peoples lives, to capture their journeys, so that these stories may touch the most hardened of us, so that maybe, just maybe, they may open our eyes to others and help spread empathy. And even though we’re not a charity and we’re not funded in anyway, we do this to help spread kindness and well-being in a world full of ill-news and often despairing headlines.

What does it take for some of us to help those we don’t know, without expecting anything in return?

Why does Queensland only have 5 Hospices?

Hospice care is a type of health care that focuses on the palliation of a terminally ill patient’s pain and symptoms and attending to their emotional and spiritual needs at the end of life. Hospice care prioritises comfort and quality of life by reducing pain and suffering for the patient and their family. Most countries with advanced economies will have a hospice in every region of the country. These numbers are approximate;

there are 5,500 hospices in the United States
235 in Germany
155 in England
33 in N.Z.

In Queensland, we have 5.

The Mountain Cares is the country’s latest Australian hospice, a charity providing free holistic hospice care at home with Nurses & Health Care Workers for terminally ill residents through to their final place of rest. Where The Mountain Cares stands out, is they intend on creating a simple framework, a written and visual guide, that will explain in layman’s terms how to setup and establish a hospice for any community Australia-wide that wishes to have one.

And to do this, 100 Acts of Kindness Films will be filming the stories of several individuals, living the last of their days, and their families being cared for by The Mountain Cares. The hospice will help them travel in style (see pictures below) to tick off their bucket list, and we’ll be there every step of the way to show what a difference a hospice can make to those that need it. Hopefully this will lead to change with every community nationwide seeing the benefits of having such a special place.

Nominated for Citizen of the Year 2021!

We’ve been working so hard lately to put out documentary films for those in need around Australia, but particularly in Brisbane, on the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. With many more in the pipeline, such as a documentary on families of farmers that have committed suicide. In Queensland, farmers are more than twice as likely than the general population to take their own lives, with the suicide rate recently rising to five times that of non-farmers in extremely remote parts of the state. For these kind of films, we ask for no payment in return other than to pass on the Act of Kindness.

Today I received a letter from Cr Greg Christensen me that I’ve been nominated for Citizen of the Year for the Scenic Rim. It’s an honour just to be nominated and have this work recognised. I really hope it may inspire others to pass on an act of kindness. Thank you

How Mel Goodland was passed on an Act of Kindness

Today something happened to me: I had a random act of kindness bestowed upon me by someone who is well renowned in her field of Art – She is an accomplished respected artist, but she is much more than that to me – she is my kind, thoughtful, humbling, sincere friend – Susan Capan.

It’s amazing how close one can get to a person who they’ve never met in person but when you meet them in real time, you just know that when you wrap your arms around that person your heart is filled with love and glee.

Please indulge me and read my post in full. It would mean a lot to me and I know you will feel better once you have read it.

I choose to live my [ethos] life giving to those less fortunate. I love nothing more than making someone feel better, live better or just smile because they made it through the day. I have always known there are people out there like me but never expected someone to recognize me as that person who deserves to be ‘given’ that act of kindness. I am private, humble, live simply and organically and allow the universe to guide me – The wind blows me and I land where I land. When I land, that’s the place I’m needed.

Drew does not know me, but he did an act of kindness by making a film for my friends business Susan Capan https://www.capanart.com/Capanart Mount Tamborine [for free] and Susan was to pay forward an act of kindness to someone who she thought was deserving. What Susan did was chose me to receive that act of kindness – She said you Mel; deserve this more than anyone I know.

With lump in throat and tears welling in my eyes, I stood in the middle of her Gallery with a heart filled with love, hope, faith and blessings that this person thought I was deserving of her gift of love and kindness. I never seek reward or recognition – I actually hide from it. It wasn’t just a gift of kindness though – it was a painting that Susan had made with love. A painting of a photo [of mine] I had taken of two simple white roses… she named it ‘The Roses’.

A connection has already been made now, between myself and Drew with myself being a photographer and [budding film maker] and a connection which has only grown stronger between myself and Susan. In Drew’s words… “There are always people worse off than you and a simple gesture can make all the difference to someone.”

I am paying forward my act of kindness: I am working with a very unwell gentleman who is 35 years old, a Lawyer and a proud man. He is suffering with a serious Neurological Disorder which is crippling. Chronic Tics; Seizures; Tremors and Night Terrors and Panic Attacks which would bring anyone to their knees. He can no longer work and has no income – It is my honor, pleasure and duty to nurse, care and hopefully heal him from his pain which I too do for free. My payment is seeing him get better – I saw him only today [for a check up] and told him, I will not stop helping him until he is well – that was my solemn promise. I ask those reading this to have quiet reflection today – alone – calmly and quietly. Please, if you can, do an act of kindness for someone. It doesn’t have to be extravagant; it could be just helping someone navigate through a door; leaving a note on a windscreen; giving that friend a call to check in or just smile at a stranger.

As Drew says: “As long as I can remember, I’ve had a freakish ability to slow down people’s split-second facial expressions to almost a frame, frozen in time, where it then just hangs there in my head as the person continues talking. That expression says so much more than words alone. It truly is a window to the soul. By freezing those expressions, I want others to see the hidden joy they can instill in others through a simple act of kindness.

As part of our contribution to, first the Bush Fire Business Recovery Initiative and now the COVID-19 Business Recovery Initiative, 100 Acts of Kindness Films have been filming and producing free promotional videos , totaling tens of thousands of dollars, to struggling businesses right across the Scenic Rim, Queensland Australia.

My Yoga Retreat help busy people with busy minds reconnect to their bodies, hearts and nature on a weekend silent retreat in the heart of the ancient rainforests of Springbrook , Queensland.

They take you on a journey, far removed from the daily grind. Allowing you to deeply listen to nature , your heart and your soul .
We spent the weekend filming at one of their retreats, and even though we were working, still came away completely invigorated.

At 100 Acts of Kindness Films, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to help revive the dwindling tourism that has heavily impacted businesses in our communities as a result of the bush fires, the flooding and now the Coronavirus. When we heard about businesses struggling to stay afloat, we rolled up our sleeves, and have since been creating FREE promotional videos, worth thousands of dollars, for local businesses on a purely philanthropic basis.

And here is one of them. When Karen at Bygone Days contacted us about creating a movie for her business, we spent a few days getting to know her and her passion for all things vintage. Raising money for Bernie’s reunion

If you haven’t been following this story, Bernie is 91, and has a photographic memory. He’s fought in numerous wars and has allowed me in to a wonderful world of vivid memories and undocumented stories that I have had the privilege of filming. He has always thought he was the last surviving member of the force sent in to clean up Hiroshima in 1945. But I have found not only surviving members of the force, but comrades he knew and fought beside 70 years ago. And they are having a reunion in March in Sydney. I’m trying to raise money for Bernie, his carer and myself to attend the reunion. And I’ll have the alcohol flowing and the film rolling.
