“PLEASE HELP…”, posted Sarah on a Sunshine Coast community board. “My brother-in-law Brett has recently been granted a wedding ceremony through My Wedding Wish… Would anyone be able to recommend a videographer?” I didn’t know it at the time, but My Wedding Wish help organise wedding ceremonies for people who are terminally ill and want to get married in the short time-frame to make the most of the time they have left with their loved one.

Brett was diagnosed just 2 weeks ago with Motor Neurone Disease. Now deterioting quickly, he may only have a few weeks left.

It’s causes like Brett’s that keep us going here 100 Acts of Kindness Films.

Within a couple of days of touching base with Brett and his bride-to-be Desley, and with Brett losing his voice more and more every day, we drove up from Canungra in the Scenic Rim, to the Sunshine Coast, to film them in the first of two shoots; the second being the wedding in January 2021. We wanted to catch his wedding vows just in case his voice fades away completely by the time him and Desley marry. Thank you guys for letting us be part of your happy day .

As documentary focused cinematographers, at 100 Acts of Kindness Films, we endeavour to go above and beyond, to capture stories in peoples lives, to capture their journeys, so that these stories may touch the most hardened of us, so that maybe, just maybe, they may open our eyes to others and help spread empathy. And even though we’re not a charity and we’re not funded in anyway, we do this to help spread kindness and well-being in a world full of ill-news and often despairing headlines.

What does it take for some of us to help those we don’t know, without expecting anything in return?

How Mel Goodland was passed on an Act of Kindness

Today something happened to me: I had a random act of kindness bestowed upon me by someone who is well renowned in her field of Art – She is an accomplished respected artist, but she is much more than that to me – she is my kind, thoughtful, humbling, sincere friend – Susan Capan.

It’s amazing how close one can get to a person who they’ve never met in person but when you meet them in real time, you just know that when you wrap your arms around that person your heart is filled with love and glee.

Please indulge me and read my post in full. It would mean a lot to me and I know you will feel better once you have read it.

I choose to live my [ethos] life giving to those less fortunate. I love nothing more than making someone feel better, live better or just smile because they made it through the day. I have always known there are people out there like me but never expected someone to recognize me as that person who deserves to be ‘given’ that act of kindness. I am private, humble, live simply and organically and allow the universe to guide me – The wind blows me and I land where I land. When I land, that’s the place I’m needed.

Drew does not know me, but he did an act of kindness by making a film for my friends business Susan Capan https://www.capanart.com/Capanart Mount Tamborine [for free] and Susan was to pay forward an act of kindness to someone who she thought was deserving. What Susan did was chose me to receive that act of kindness – She said you Mel; deserve this more than anyone I know.

With lump in throat and tears welling in my eyes, I stood in the middle of her Gallery with a heart filled with love, hope, faith and blessings that this person thought I was deserving of her gift of love and kindness. I never seek reward or recognition – I actually hide from it. It wasn’t just a gift of kindness though – it was a painting that Susan had made with love. A painting of a photo [of mine] I had taken of two simple white roses… she named it ‘The Roses’.

A connection has already been made now, between myself and Drew with myself being a photographer and [budding film maker] and a connection which has only grown stronger between myself and Susan. In Drew’s words… “There are always people worse off than you and a simple gesture can make all the difference to someone.”

I am paying forward my act of kindness: I am working with a very unwell gentleman who is 35 years old, a Lawyer and a proud man. He is suffering with a serious Neurological Disorder which is crippling. Chronic Tics; Seizures; Tremors and Night Terrors and Panic Attacks which would bring anyone to their knees. He can no longer work and has no income – It is my honor, pleasure and duty to nurse, care and hopefully heal him from his pain which I too do for free. My payment is seeing him get better – I saw him only today [for a check up] and told him, I will not stop helping him until he is well – that was my solemn promise. I ask those reading this to have quiet reflection today – alone – calmly and quietly. Please, if you can, do an act of kindness for someone. It doesn’t have to be extravagant; it could be just helping someone navigate through a door; leaving a note on a windscreen; giving that friend a call to check in or just smile at a stranger.

As Drew says: “As long as I can remember, I’ve had a freakish ability to slow down people’s split-second facial expressions to almost a frame, frozen in time, where it then just hangs there in my head as the person continues talking. That expression says so much more than words alone. It truly is a window to the soul. By freezing those expressions, I want others to see the hidden joy they can instill in others through a simple act of kindness.

Charity Auction for your own cinematic movie for your business!

These rains are wonderful and have eased the immense pressure off our Firies , whom have literally and voluntarily put their lives on the line to save us. Unfortunately I wish this was the case nationwide, as local fire brigades are being sent interstate to help others very much still in danger of their homes being destroyed. Just last night, residents were fleeing towns in Victoria’s north-east for the third time in weeks as an out-of-control bushfire south of Myrtleford threatened homes. The fire flared up again yesterday evening, and locals in Buffalo River and Nug Nug were told it was too late to leave. This could be us next month.
If this is indeed a trend in climate, then we do need to be more prepared for next time this happens locally.
Under 100 Acts of Kindness Films , I create cinematic style promotional movies for businesses and charities, and am auctioning the filming and production of one, approximately 3 minute, promotional video to any local business to use as they wish. Having spoken to many local businesses, many are struggling due to the falling number of visitors to the area following our local fires. So, the only caveat to this auction is that there needs to be a line or two in the video that promotes our beautiful region in general, to help revive tourism again.
All the money received will be donated to the Queensland Rural Fire Service to help in the provision of essential equipment that assists volunteers in performing the many and varied functions that are required by our communities.
I’ll start the bid at $500 with the closing date being Sunday 26th January 2020 at 8pm. I’ll put the auction up on several groups, but will post updates on the highest bidders on the 100 Acts of Kindness Facebook page which you can find by searching on Facebook for @100actsofkindnessfilms.

Australian Bush Buddies – the movie

When I heard there would be an Aussie native wildlife demo at the local library, I thought I might be able to get a few seconds worth of good footage for the latest movie in the works “Rising from the fires in the Scenic Rim“. The experience was so magical, I just kept the film rolling and it turned into a little touching movie of it’s own. Wish I’d brought my proper audio gear with me to record her, Lou has an amazing presenting voice.

If you need a cinematic style movie produced for your business, give me a call. I’m based on the Scenic Rim and create movies on the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunny Coast, but can even travel to other parts of Australia such as Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, the ACT and the Northern Territory. My overheads are small, which keeps prices down.
